Show Dixie Senior LL wins District Tourney ; Dixie Senior Little Leaguers walked off with top honors in the Utah District tournament staged in Cedar City this past week. ;,The tournament was not without effort, however, as South Sevier challenged the Dixie crew to the final out only to lose 1-0 in a tough pitching battle. ' For Dixie they will advance to the Sub-Sectional tournament which got underway Tuesday of this week in Cedar City. This ' tournament is a ' three-team double elimination affair and the fiixie crew drew an opening round bye. ! Matched Tuesday were Clearfield, representing Utah District 2 and Las Vegas, Nev. Dixie won their opening round game in the District tournament with a 1 1-3 victory over Parowan. In the semi-final the traditional Cedar-Dixie matchup was held with the Dixie crew coasting to a out South Sevier in the sixth and seventh for the win. In consolation play they had trouble with the weather. Beaver and Parowan were rained out Friday but played early Saturday morning with Beaver scoring an 8-3 victory to eliminate Parowan. Parowan took a three run lead in the first inning but could not hold on. Beaver came back with three in the third to take a 4-3 lead and but the game away in the sixth with three more tallies. Parowan was limited to five hits in the contest. In the first inning the big blow for Parowan was a double by Pat Benson.. Richfield drew a second round, bye in consolation play and met Beaver Saturday evening Richfield Rich-field came out with a 12-2 victory in a game shortened to six innings in-nings by rain. Mike Smith of Richfield held Beaver to just two hits. Richfield scored four in the first on four hits and added three in the second to lead early and win nnnvinnincjlv without benefit of a hit in the fifth frame. Dixie got off to a flying start with three runs in the first inning and they put the game away with five runs on three hits in the fourth. Two errors, two walks two stolen bases and two hits all contributed to be three run first inning for Dixie. Gary Jack led off the top the first with a drive to deep center and ended up on second base, The completion of the game, v however, changed immediately when he was picked off. 12-2 victory behind the no-hit pitching of Randall O'Neil. That put them into the championship game Saturday. South Sevier won their opening round game over Beaver in a thrilling 6-5 win that went, two extra innings. Beaver led through most of the contest and South Sevier scored a run in the bottom bf the seventh to knot the score at 5-all forcing the extra innings then scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. South Sevier drew a second round bye into the championship against Dixie. In the Dixie-South Sevier championship it was a pitcher battle with Tony Smith of South Sevier winning the pitching battle but Craig Seegmiller picked up the victory for Dixie with a fine effort of his own. Smith gave up only one hit, a single in the first inning of play and collected 14 strikeouts in the seven inning contest in a losing effort. Seegmiller was nearly as impressive giving up three scattered hits and collecting seven strikeouts of his own. In that championship game Dixie scored the only run of the contest in the third frame. Allen Bentley walked, moved to second on a passed ball, to third on a wild pitch and came on to score on a wild pitch. South Sevier appeared to retaliate in the fourth when Roger Farnsworth led off the frame with a triple but he ended up involved in a double play when he tried to score following an infield out at first base. Again in the fifth South Sevier got off strong with Bill Meacham living on an error then moving to third on another infield error. He overran third, however, and was caught sliding back to the base for the first out of the inning. Ironically he would have scored on the next play when Garland Owens singled - but what might have been was not and Dixie shut Cedar Tournament team got off to a great start in their opener against Richfield scoring a 10-0 shutout. It was one of the finest pitching efforts of the tournament tour-nament as Kevin Robinson of Cedar threw the no-hit shutout victory. In doing so he collected 17 strikeouts over the seven 1 innings of play. He did get in 1 trouble in the first inning loading the bases on an error and two walks with no outs, but struck out the side to end the threat. Cedar pushed in four runs on one hit in the second then added four runs on five hits in the sixth. Only extra base hit in the 10 run spree was a double by David Smith. Smith led in Runs Batted In with three. It was the second round that Cedar ran into trouble against Dixie. Randall O'Neil of Dixie threw hitless balls at Cedar although they did push in a pair of runs |
