In this exchange the Cedar High School Redmen took advantage of a Spanish Fork mistake and recovered a fumble to stop a Don's drive. Redmen threatened at end but lost the homecoming event 12-6. Cedar Redmen lose Homecoming contest by inches to Spanish Fork Dons Cedar High School Red-men Red-men suffered their third successive loss in Region Six - the third by a single touchdown touch-down - in action Friday evening bowing to Spanish Fork Dons 12-6. After being dominated by the visiting Spanish Fork crew in the first half and trailing 12-0 the Redmen came back to score in the third and came within one yard of the goal line with two seconds remaining before losing the battle. The Redmen came out after the half trailing 12-0 and controlled the football. Capitalizing on a short punt by the Dons late in the period, the Redmen took control at their own 44. A roughing the passer penalty moved the ball for a first and ten on the Dons 36. Brad Jackson carried to the 22 for another first down and on two more carries he had moved the ball to the 10 for another first and goal situation. Again Jackson carried to the four, Dave Edwards failed to move on a keeper from his quarterback slot then Jackson hit to the two and again through the middle of the line for the score with just one second showing on the clock to end the third quarter. The attempt at-tempt at the PAT was missed. Runs for Dons In the fourth period Christensen rambled for a couple of big gains but the Redmen defense stiffened on their own 34 and forced the Dons into a passing game. Shawn Webster picked off a Pearson pass and returned it to the 31. An encrouchment penalty stopped the drive forcing a punt. The Dons promptly turned over a fumble on their own 20 with 4:19 left in the game. Jackson carried to the 14 and then to the nine, but Edwards Ed-wards got caught behind the line for a loss back to the 15. Jackson drove on the next play just shy of the 10 and the Dons defense had held. Strong defense Spanish Fork again on the attack turned to Christensen and they moved to a first and 10 on their own 42, but two good defensive plays moved them back to the 36 and a third and 15. A pass fell short forcing the punt and the Redmen took over at their own 32 with just 1:29 left on the clock. An Edwards to Jackson pass took the ball to the 46 and Jackson on a sweep carried for a first down on the Dons 47. With 59 seconds remaining Edwards connected con-nected on a pass to Chris Lamoreaux for 21 yards to the 26 for a first down and then connected with Kevin Jones for 16 yards just short of the 10 for another first down, with 29 seconds remaining. Two attempted passes fell astray in the endzone and with 18 seconds left an encrouchment en-crouchment penalty moved the ball just short of the five for a third and five situation. Frank Thorley carried on a sweep but was trapped at the one yard line, short of the goal line and just short of the first down. The Dons took possession with two seconds on the clock. For the Redmen it was too little, too late. Early lead The Dons, who now have a rtwnrd rtf twn uirtu and nn losses, dominated the first half of play and relied heavily on the excellent skills of Christensen. The first score of the game came as the clock ran out in the first quarter of play on a 30 yard jaunt by Christensen. Christen-sen. The Redmen were in trouble throughout the second quarter of play with a fumble on the kickoff following the punt. The ball was turned over to the Dons on the Redmen 20 but the Cedar defense held forcing a fumble on the 10. The Redmen moved for a first and ten at the 25 but was stimied and forced to punt following a 15 yard penalty. Again the defense held the Dons at the 42 forcing a punt. Jackson returned to the 22 and a holding penalty on the Dons moved the ball to the 42, but an attempt at a reverse was bobbled and the Dons came up with a fumble recovery on the 12 yard line. Three plays later Christensen had again scored and a pass for the PAT was missed giving the visitors a 12-0 lead, a lead they never relinquished although challenged strongly by the Redmen in the second half of play. |
