Show Utahnspay higher taxes than norm Utah State income taxes are higher than the national average, said Jack A. Olson, Executive Vice-President, Utah Taxpayers Association. In a report released Monday, Mr. Olson said that of 44 states collecting individual income taxes in 1976 Utah ranked 18th in income taxes per capita and 12th in income taxes per $1,000 of personal income. The figures, compiled from recently released Census Bureau information, show Utah's 1976 per capita income tax to be $114.46 compared to the national average of $100.24. The highest state was Alaska at $382.86. Other western states and their per capita rankings were Colorado, $124.03, 14th; Idaho. $118.92, 17th; and Arizona, $71.75. 31st. Nevada has no income tax. In terms of state income tax revenues per $1,000 of personal income, the report showed Utah's figure to be $23.68 compared to a national average of $17.13. The highest state was Alaska at $44.00. Other western states and their rankings per $1,000 of personal income are Idaho, $23.34, 13th; Colorado, $21.12, 18th; and Arizona, $13 68, 31st. All of Utah's individual income tax goes to the Uniform School Fund. Many people do not realize this, Olson said. Schools also take about 60 percent of the property taxes collected in Utah. |
