"The initial purpose of Lighthous is to provide people with the proper referral or information in-formation ' they need when problems come up," said Jo-lene Jo-lene Lawry, Lighthouse Director Direc-tor and SUSC psychology student. stu-dent. A ground rule for Light- j house is that all calls are confidential. After a two month mon-th training period telephone lines opened February 22 manned iby volunteers trained t0 understand and empathize with a callers problems. During the training period volunteers worked on empathy and group work, role playing, and general information to enable en-able them to effectively listen to the caller's problems as well as offer solutions or alternatives. . Special thanks go to Cedar pity business contributing building materials for Lighthouse Light-house facilities. Contributors include Iron County Lumber, the Cedar Theatre, and Leigh Furniture. The Lighthouse was cleaned, clean-ed, painted and decorated by volunteers. Posters were ' designed de-signed by Norm Rdbinson. . Telephone lines are open Monday through Thursday, 5 p.m. to 1 a.m.; Friday and Sat. urday, 5 p.m. to 2 a.m.; and Sunday, 4 p.m. to 1 a.m. The telephone number is 586-9966. "We encourage community members to become Lighthouse Light-house volunteers," Miss Lawry Law-ry said. "Our volunteers range from 18 years old o 55 years old and people who want to learn to help people are welcome wel-come in the next training group." Interested persons can call the Lighthouse or Jolene 1 Lawry at 586-4796 evenings. : -i- Information on family planning, plan-ning, draft obligations, suicide drugs, pregnancy, school policies, poli-cies, loans or housing problems prob-lems is available. If Lighthouse Light-house does'nt have information informa-tion on a problem one night it will be available the next. Professional help and counseling coun-seling is available through a referral system. A back-up staff with a professional person per-son such as a psychiatrist or doctor Is on call at all times. In addition to Miss Lawry, Randy Larsen and Dan Yergensen, Yer-gensen, both SUSC psychology majors, are Lighthouse staff members.
