Show Social Security should replace earnings The social security program is based on the idea of replacing re-placing part of the earnings lost to a family when a worker work-er retires, becomes disabled, or dies. The cash payments can mean that a family can stay together, that children can complete their education, and that disabled children, including those severely mentally retarded, can receive a lifetime income. Children can receive monthly month-ly payments up to age 18. Payments will continue after ag.e 18 if the child is a full time student. These benefits stop at age 22 even though the child has not finished school. If a child Is disabled before age 18, he can receive benefits bene-fits as long as he is unable to work. These benefits are payable even though the child is over age 18 when his parent par-ent becomes entitled to social security. In many families, both the husband and wife work. If they work in Jobs covered by social security, both are building build-ing protection for themselves and their families. Children are considered dependent on both their mother and fathers, and they may become eligible for benefits when either parent par-ent becomes entitled to retirement re-tirement or disability benefits, bene-fits, or dies afer working long enough under social security.
