Show 25.8 Mills City sets tax Levy, approves street program I The Cedar City Council met .1 regular session last Thurs-lay Thurs-lay evening August 7 and icted upon several matters of .nportance. The mill levy for roperty tax for the coming ear was set at 25.8 mills hieh is the same as in the ast few years. This will pro- uce a slightly higher Income l the coming year because f the increased valuation of .ie city. Street Oiling In other action the Council iccepted the bid of Western iock Products on the street iling program, for 1969. WestA jrn Rock was the sole bijKfer n the project and submitted i bid of $6.90 per ton.pius 15 -ents per square yard for tack ;oat. Although the form of tho Jid was different this year, ne cost Is comparable to last ear's bid. Mayor Loren Whet-.en Whet-.en indicated that this year jeveral streets would be re-urfaced re-urfaced with a one-inch .nulch and this necessitated x change in the bid form. Tentative plans for the .street oiling program this year nclude the following streets: che north end of Highland Jrive; 300 East from College Avenue to 400 South; Linclon Avenue from 100 East to Main Street; the remainder of the Golf Course Road; Parkway Park-way Circle; 225 East, and 75 West. Some of these projects are tentative, subject to cooperation co-operation of property owners on the cost sharing program of the city. Several othei streets are under considera tion for inclusion in the pro gram but are also subject to arrangements to be worked out with property owners. Police Hearing A public hearing was held with City Police Officers to determine City policy concern, ing the new Utah Public Safe-ty Safe-ty Retirement Program passed by the last Utah State Legislature. Legis-lature. Under the new pro-gram pro-gram it is mandantory for all 3rd class cities (Cedar City's Ci-ty's claasification) to subscribe sub-scribe to the program unless a public hearing with public safety officers is held and the plan is rejected. After consid-erable consid-erable discussion Cedar City chose not to adopt the program pro-gram but to remain under the regular Utah State Retirement program. The Mayor cited the increased in-creased cost to the city and the officers as the main reason for not subscribing to the program. pro-gram. Although the program did offer many advantages, including early retirement, the cost was prohibitive, he said. It would have cost the city an additional 8 and the officers an additional 2rc. The Council also acted to hire an additional Policeman for the city force. Roger Harris, a 28 year old native of Kanab, was hired to begin work immediately. im-mediately. Mr. Harris has attended at-tended Southern Utah State College and holds a 2-year certificate in Police Science. He was a member of Southern Utah State Security and has had experience with the Kanab Ka-nab Police department. In final action the Council approved the purchase of new seating for the lobby of the Municipal Airport in an continued con-tinued effort to improve the airport facilities. |
