Show "Upward Bound" summer session ends in success The summer session of Upward Up-ward Bound on the Southern Utah State College campus came to a close August 2 and was termed a success by all, involved. The program was! made up of approximately 50 1 students from high schools in Utah, Arizona, and Nevada. The eight week program was divided into two four week sessions and included academic as well as recreational recrea-tional activities. During the first session classes in Social Science, Communications, Math, Individual Development, Develop-ment, Art, Photography, Police Pol-ice Science, Music, and Phys-i Phys-i ical Education were offered with instructors from Southern South-ern Utah State and high schools in the area participating. partici-pating. Also included in first session ses-sion activities were field trips to the Mountain Mead-j ows-Voyo area and to Bryce j Canyon. During the second session Courses in Earth Science and life-time sports were added to th.? schedule and field trips included a -1-day trip to southern south-ern California and a week long Earth-Science Institute at the College Ranch in Cedar Ce-dar Canyon. Objectives of the program were to give students an enjoyable en-joyable learning experience and to acquaint them with a college atmosphere to prepare pre-pare them for their further education. Many students received re-ceived high school credits that will help them to graduate gradu-ate this coming year. A fully organized student government functioned during dur-ing tne summer session with an executive council, senate and student court. The students stu-dents all participated in civic projects including a clean up of the Municipal Golf Course and a variety program taken to the Old Folks home. Director of the program is R. Kenneth Benson with B. Wayne Mifflin acting as assistant as-sistant drreetor. Instructors included: Rex Hulet, Norman Romberger, Doug Bonzo, La Veil Chamberlain, Glen Dale Anderson, Fred Schwendi-man, Schwendi-man, Max Bonzo of Cedar City; Duane Judd of Fredon-ia; Fredon-ia; Ken Porter of Delta; Ro-lane Ro-lane DiFoere of St. George I and Paul Burgoyne, Dean ! Pearson, Bruce Osborne, Boyd Adams, Tom Kingsford, and Cleo Petty of the Southern South-ern Utah State faculty. |
