Show CLAUDE'S . ? . f ommsmiA S by Claude Orton We are sorry to hear that the Main Street property own-ners own-ners turned thumbs down on the proposed curb and gutter project on that street. How the vote went. We haven't learned, nor if there was any conditions whereby if might be reconsidered. All we do know, is that the price tag on the project, $8 per foot, was! too high. We feel that it Is too. " . , , . We understand that placing new curb and gutter the full length of the street was one of the requirements made by the State Highway Department Depart-ment if that street was to be ; built out from curb to curb as a part of the construction program. Widening it a few feet was also a part of the program, we understand. Anyway Any-way the property owners who would have to pay for it, said "no". What will happen now is debateable. Whether other concessions will be made by either side, is not known as yet. When the property owners own-ers on East Center Street had curb and gutter laid on the street, it cost $3.75 and $4.75 per foot, but to make it that low, the State did the engineering, engin-eering, the city did the exea-vating. exea-vating. Is that out on the Main Street project? We imagine ima-gine that would help. As we look at the street, some of the property owners would really get nicked pretty hard, and the improvement, wouldn't would-n't do them that much good. Especially as they are only home owners. And again, perhaps they have a feeling that after they dig up all that money to make the street beautiful, that the city council and state highway high-way department, might go in together, and re-route Main Street up 100 East. Then they could by-pass the entire business bus-iness district. I am going to tip my hat (if I had one) to the ladies of North Iron Countv. who did such a good job in reaching reach-ing the area goal in the recent re-cent cancer crusade. We received re-ceived a news story this week from the American Cancer Society, So-ciety, Utah Division, telling us that our area, including Summit, Parowan and Para-gonah, Para-gonah, reached 116 of the goal set by the society1. It was anil 4a nnf nf tho mnst WOf- thy drives for funds, among the many, and I am happy to see this area do so well Our cortgtffitdlatrdMV.go to the chairman, her assistants,'1 and those who did the canvassing. We also extend our thanks to the residents of the three communities for the way they responded to the call of the canvassers. You did your share also in making the crusade a success. As I have had occasion the past two weeks to go past the high school building that faces on Main Street, I have noticed with disgust the condition con-dition of the gutter on that block. It la filled with used cartons which contained ice cream and cold drinks, and napkins and sandwich bags. Monday morning the sight was terrible, and I hope that it was cleaned out early that day. And sitting there on the curb was a nicely painted refuse re-fuse barrel,, placed there for the purpose of receiving the rubbish and litter that filled the gutter. I know, it would have taken some steps to deposit de-posit the pasteboard cartons, those who emptied them perhaps per-haps would have had to step out of their car to get to it Folks, It lookedr like "h -I" Monday morning, and wt all should help out a little to make It look better. Our pride should teach us better than that. Dont say anything yet, but up to now there has been very little activity at the supposed sup-posed West Interchange from Parowan onto Interstate-15 as yet. I had heard that the bids for its construction had been called for, and should have been opened before now. We are beginning to wonder what is happening to that part of the project. Shove over Kanar-ra, Kanar-ra, maybe we will ultimately Join you. |
