Show Graduates Bright Bastian of Hope speaker claims at Bcccalauretae Speaking to a theme of "Somewhere Between" Dr. I Leon McCarrey, associate I commissioner, Utah System of i Higher Education, told 257 Southern Utah State College graduates Thursday, June 4, that they were one of the bright bastions of hope in a divided America. He said, "Your generation stands among the most knowledgeable, know-ledgeable, best read, and most articulate in- speech. At the same time, yours is the first generation that has taken law and order into its own hands." I "In a democracy, you should , assist, through the legislative I process, in the development of rules and regulations by which you will be governed. If we want students to be ra-1 ra-1 tional, we must reward rationally. ra-tionally. We should reward, and respect a student more who can ask the right question ques-tion than the one who always has the right answer," Dr. McCarrey Mc-Carrey said. He told the graduates that "Institutions of higher learning learn-ing must respond to the needs of our day, but they alone cannot solve all of the ills of which infest our society. Unless Un-less the community, church, and each individual is responsive re-sponsive and willing to build a better world, our present system of government democracy dem-ocracy will not survive." "In the past our nation has been spared because men of integrity, however, diverse in their views, have been willing to sit down and in a rational way workout their.differences This, I believe, is long overdue; over-due; tolerance is needed," Dr. McCarry maintained. |
