Show Reading Club meet at Elda Manning's Mrs. Elda Manning entertained enter-tained 13 members of the Reading Club at her home on May 23rd. One guest, Mrs. Ronald Ro-nald Dalley, was also present. The life of Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1872) was reviewed by Mrs. Cora Stucki. Events discussed dis-cussed included his appointment appoint-ment to West Point, his term as Lincoln's vice president, the spoils system, some of the great scandals, the great Chicago Chi-cago fire, and the joining of the East and West railroads. It was also during this time that Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone. Mrs. Stucki also pointed out that as commander of the Northern Army during the Civil War, Grant treated the South well. |
