Show Redmen down Eagles 62 - 50 in important League Battle The Cedar High Schoo! Redmen picked up a big victory vic-tory Saturday night when they defeated the Millard Eagles 62-50 to stay In the running for the Region Eight Class A basketball title. It was the first league loss for the Eagles after two successive suc-cessive victories and for the Redmen it was their initial win after suffering a loss to Dixie in the league opener. Both teams went into the game without one of their starters- The Eagles had their talented senior Richard George on the bench with an ankle injury suffered the previous week against Hurricane while Jim Rurns a Tf!?llar for the boards and he also led the Redmen in scoring picking up 23 points in the contest. Bern-ie Bern-ie Leavitt added 20 for the only two Redmen in double figures. Between the two they also dominated the rebounding rebound-ing and picked up numerous fouls in second efforts. Between Be-tween them they shot 23 foul shots and converted on 17. Dispite the win the Redmen were not impressive in the outing and lacked the finesse of a well working team effort. Several occasions the Redmen fell victim t0 the full court press thrown up by the visiting visit-ing Eagles. The Eagles likewise had difficulty finding and executing execut-ing a workable offense an offense that has previously been dominated by George as the team's leading scorer and rebounder. In other action in the league the Delta Rabbits, after suffering suf-fering a loss at the hands of Millard traveled to Hurricane to pick up a victory by a score of 64-61. The victory for Delta dropped Hurricane into the cellar and tied Cedar, Dixie and Delta in second place, one-half game behind the Eagles. The Eagles, who undoubtedly undoubted-ly have built much of their offense around 6-4 George found difficulty in generating their offense in the game and the Redmen held the lead from bginning to end. Coach Dick Hobbs' crew jumped out to a quick lead then held onto the lead throughout. Never was the game out of reach for the Eagles as they scrapped to stay in the contest, con-test, but they could not quite catch the Redmen. Bill Banaszynski at 6-4 was a controlling factor on the |
