Marie Bunnell Bun-nell and Mamie Eck, left discuss Utah Shakespearean Festival activities with visitors. The two have served within the festival for many years as hostesses. Mamie Eck, Marie Bunnell extends service to Shakespearean Festival itable work through service t( the Festival, the Cedar City Chamber of Commerce, and the Cedar City Elks Lodge charity program. She annually annual-ly mails many brochures publicizing pub-licizing the Festival . and the Cedar City area throughout Utah and all the western states. Her work with the Elks Lodge includes vists to nursing homes in Cedar City and Parowan, where she acts as master of ceremonies for special Christmas programs taken to these groups of elderly eld-erly people. Also at Christmas time, Miss Eck and Lois Mc-Connell Mc-Connell visit the elderly and homebound throughout Iron County. She has participated in the annual campus-commun 1 1 y presentation of the "Messiah" "Loyalty" is a word that can well describe the attitude of two Cedar City women who have worked for many years for the Utah Shakespearean Festival. Mamie Eck and Mario Bunnell are familiar to Festival audiences as two very gracious ladies who handle han-dle programs and serve generally gen-erally as hostesses through the Festival season. Miss Eck and Mrs. Bunnell alternate in their capacity as hostess, each usually working three nights a week. They greet patrons as they enter the front door of the auditorium, auditor-ium, supply information, and sell programs. In the words of Miss Eck, "In our capacity as hostesses we find that those attending the Festival have many ques- oshe managed her own business busi-ness in San Pedro, Calif, for 15 years and iwas employed by J. C. iPenney Company. During World War II she sold the highest amount of savings bonds in her organization. In Cedar City she has worked as a Welcome Wagon hostess and at Zion Photo. In former years she worked at the Goodie Good-ie Gardens and the Piute Cafe, also in Cedar City. Mrs. Bunnell is an active rnemlber and past president of the Business and Professional Women's Club and traveled to Hawaii wnth that organization in 1959. She has also traveled in Mexico and Canada and throughout much of the United Un-ited States. She attended the graduation of a grandson from West Point Academy in 1959. since 1935, and has spoken at a number of fireside program. pro-gram. She is called upon frequently for talks and discussions dis-cussions at clubs and groups wishing to know more about welfare work. She is particularly particu-larly knowledgeable about the history of the Piute In-' dians. Miss Eck was a charter member, and Is still affiliated affiliat-ed with the Cedar City Business Busi-ness and Professional , Women's Wo-men's Club. She is also a member of . the Escalante Knife and Fork Club, National Nation-al American Public Welfare Association, Utah State Welfare Wel-fare Directors' Association, League of Women Voters, and Phi Sigma Alpha sorority. tions besides asking directions direc-tions to the play area. They have questions relative to the plays, the residence of the performers, the history of Cedar Ce-dar City, the economy of the area, the founding of the college col-lege and its present enrollment, enroll-ment, and others." Miss Eck added that a surprising sur-prising number of state and out-of-state Visitors solicit help in locating local relatives rela-tives or friends. . Regarding her work with the Festival, Miss Eck stated that, "It is an interesting experience. ex-perience. The most amazing factor is how far the publicity has spread. Many people from out of state now plan their vacation to include the Festi- Mrs. Bunnell is also a past matron of the Order of Eastern Star. She is the mother of four children, five grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and one great, great grandson. Concerning her service with the Festival, Mrs. Bunnell says, "It is a community service ser-vice that is moist rewarding because of the Interesting people I meet, many of whom return year after year. I value the friendship of the young people and actors and actresses actress-es in the Festival. It is a pleasure plea-sure to work with the townspeople towns-people who also contribute their time and talents to help make the Festival a success." bhe has been a member of the Cedar City Coordinating Council and Civil Defense Committee. Miss Eck has been a member mem-ber of the Festival concession staff since 1968, the year of her retirement as director of the Iron County Welfare De-partment. De-partment. She had served in ?he department since 1943. ?he Is still a member of the Utah State Employees Association Assoc-iation as a retired member. She has continued her char- |
