Cedar Sixth Ward Takes 2nd Place In Division Meet Cedar Sixth Ward won second sec-ond place honors in the Divisional Divi-sional Ensign basketball tournament tour-nament of the LDS Church, staged in Panguitch last week. Picking up the championship champion-ship title and the right to advance to a playoff against the winner in the Las Vegas area was Santa Clara Ward. Cedar Eighth Ward won consolation honors in the tournament tour-nament after losing their opening game, and two of the Cedar City participants were named to the tournament's tourna-ment's All-star Team. The five man team included includ-ed Bruce Blackner of the Cedar Ce-dar Sixth Ward; Bernell Thor-ley, Thor-ley, Cedar Eighth Ward; Danny Dan-ny Frei, Santa Clara; B. Jenkins, Jen-kins, Circleville; and Randy Anderson, Junction. The Cedar Kivrh WnrH rln. feated Circleville 57 to 56 in their opening game of the tournament, then came back in the second round of play to down Junction by a score of 49 to 46, moving them into the championship game. In the championship battle, the Sixth got behind in the first half of play and, although al-though they outscored the Santa Clara crew in the second sec-ond half, they couldn't make up the deficit. Score at half-time half-time was 28 to 15 with Cedar outscoring Santa Clara 20 to 10 in the final quarter of play. Beaver third Ward was named nam-ed as the sportsmanship winner win-ner in the event. Cedar Eighth Ward lost their opening round battle to Washington 49 to 42, then came back to defeat the Cedar Ce-dar First by a wide margin and belted Enterprise 73 to 42 for the consolation title. In that game, Bernell Thorley scored 34 points to lead his team in the victory. Santa Clara will meet Las Vegas tournament champions on March 2 in St. George in a single game, with the winner win-ner to advance to the All-Church All-Church competition at the Ensign En-sign level. |
