Show Saint George Little 1 League All-Stars i Win District Title Sunset Little League team of St. George is on its way this week to Reno, Nev., where it will participate in a sectional tournament. tour-nament. St. George picked up their second tournament charrviun-shlp charrviun-shlp in Cedar City Sa'.urday when 'hey defeated Sunset All-Stars All-Stars of Sun-set in northern Utah in the tour1 sment finale, 7 to 1. The St. George crew had the previous week defeated Cedar National Little League 1 to 0 in Beaver to win their way in to the Cedar tournament. Cedar American Little League All -Stars and Rosecrest of Salt Lake City were also in the district dis-trict play at Cedar City having won tournaments the previous week. Cedar American Little League was knocked out of contention for the district championship in the opening round when they were defeated by Sunset by a score of 13 to 6 in a hitting contest. con-test. St. George opened up the tournament tour-nament with a 10 to 7 victory over Rosecrest, the defending District champions. In Saturday's action Rosecrest picked up the consolation honors by defeating Cedar American 16 to 2 while St. George took tournament tour-nament honors with their win over Sunset. In Cedar's opening game the Americt.ii league All-Stars came up with 12 hits but produced only on-ly 6 runs. Sunset collected 13 runs on 11 hits. Sunset, however, took advantage of 9 walks to help their cause. Sunset picked up two runs in the top of the first inning on two hits. Cedar American came bouncing back with four hits and three runs to take a 3 to 2 lead. Steve Ashworth started it rolling with a single. That was followed by a single by Jeff Carr and Charlie Morris pushed in the first run for Cedar with the third successive single. Mike Savage also singled in the frame with Carr and Morris coming on to score. The lead changed again in the second when four hits, including includ-ing a home run by Davles of Sunset Sun-set were hit, to produce four runs. In the fourth Sunset came up with two hits and three runs including in-cluding another homer to move out in front 9 to 3. In the bottom bot-tom of the frame Nolan Anderson Ander-son singled for Cedar and Tommy Tom-my Hlgbee homered to produce two more runs for Cedar. In the fifth Sunset added three more tallies including a single homer by Clifford and added still another score in the sixth with a home run by Conley. In the bottom of the sixth Robert Burns doubled and scored on a single by Carr for the final Cedar run. Scott Pace of Rosecrest turned in one of the finest pitching performances per-formances of the tournament in the consolation game as he allowed al-lowed only two hits to the Cedar American as Rosecrest belted out a total of 13 hits and 16 runs, to dominate the game. Rosecrest ! scored in every inning. Rosecrest had five home runs in the game and a double. Two were hit by Boh Knglert. Cedar Amencnn scored their first run in the third when Marcus Mar-cus Lunt drew a walk and eventually even-tually came on to score on a passed ball. Robert P.urns scored the only other run for Cedar in the sixth. He w;is hit by a pitched pitch-ed ball, moved into scoring position posi-tion on a single by Carr anil scored on a single by Mike Saving.-. Pace collected a total of 12 jsi,ikeoiits against the Cedar I crew. Robyn Haight, Cedar starter, suffered the loss and Mike Sav-1 Sav-1 age threw in relief. In Cedar's opener Tommy Higbee was the losing pitcher with Charles Morris Mor-ris pitching in relief. j In the championship game Steve Melessia was the winning ' pitcher allowing six scattered ! hits. He gave up his first and only run in two championship 'games in the fifth frame with a I walk and a double to Sunset. St. George picked up eight hits including in-cluding a two homer in the first inning of play by Greg Tobler and a double by Melessia in the fourth frame. Tobler was the big stick for St. George with three hits In three official trips including his home run. Lester West, who the previous week hit a home run to win the area tournament at Beaver, also had three hits in three trips, including a double. |
