Show Disability Benefits Made Easier to Obtain "It is a little easier now to qualify for disability benefits under un-der social secur'.ty," Keslcr T. , Powell, manager of the Provo so-1 cial security office, said today. As a result of changes made by Congress in 1958, the work requirements were liberalized so that some people who were previously pre-viously turned down may now be eligible. The manager emphasized, emphasiz-ed, however, that there Is no change In the requirement that the disutility must e very se-ivere se-ivere nd of indefinite duration. Before the 1958 change in the 'law, the amount of work needed to qualify under social security disability provisions was at least five years out of the 10 years before be-fore becoming disabled and not less than 1H years of work bein,? in the three years preceding the disability. This last requirement (l'4 years work in three years) was repealed. Mr. Powell explained that people peo-ple who gradually became disabled disab-led found it hard to meet the requiremtnt of 1 years of work in the three years before disability, disabi-lity, and their applications had to be denied. They may now reapply re-apply under the recent change in the law. Those who are 50 years of age and over should reapply re-apply promptly to avoid losing any back payments due them. "Anyone whose application was denied because the disability disabili-ty was found not severe enough," Mr. Powell added, "is not helped by this change in the law and a new application would serve no purpose." A representative of the Social Security Administration will be in Cedar City at Utah State Employment Em-ployment Service on Feb. 2, from 9 a. m. to 3 p. m. |
