Judged as the best in the state from 30 entries young Muir will probably be awarded a radio-phonograph radio-phonograph from the Radio-Television Manufacturers plus other prizes for his efforts. The complete com-plete text of his speech is as fo.'lows: A term common to our ev-v Democracy. However it Is nothlr., new, over two thousand yeai-. jay speech and which signm" the foundation of American tree dom, security, and happiness old in fact, dating back to .Mt old Greek philosophers; tnei ideas can be contrasted u:t monarchy. This is where a sing person is representative and ia: m- rt often than not, supreme power over his people; it Is ai contrasted with aristocracy this being a chosen number j; people representing and governing govern-ing in a united body commonly known as the government. It is mainly upon the Greek's concep-tion concep-tion of how the people should be governed that the modern Gov-erriment Gov-erriment of America bases its ideals it is a government in which the general people or the governed have the last say in spite of the government's desires, and aims. In this way a dictatorship dictator-ship is not possible hence keeping this country free from any fanatic for power, such as Hitler did over his people, and as Russia is trying to do to the whole world. The basic principles and ideals of this our democracy are that all men, without exception due to blood or breeding, have equal rights, and through Democracy, the government makes the people peo-ple its ultimate object, and di-lects di-lects all its power to aid and make secure the many lives under un-der its care. Developments havei been made through Democracy! which all go to make the peo-j pies more happy in their free-j dom. Things such as the extending extend-ing of the suffrage to women,! and the system by which representatives repre-sentatives of the government can be removed by vote of the people, and also that the people have the right to demand introduction ; of a new law. Another is the popular vote for Senators. All these things though apparently but minor in detail, plainly illus-1 trate that the desires of the people peo-ple are granted through Democracy. Democ-racy. Among the many favorable points of democracy. I think it is generally agreed that the people themselves are the best guardians guard-ians of their own interests; there-foie there-foie it could be said that social freedom is more perfectly guaranteed, guar-anteed, than any other policy, than with Democracy. Then with certain exceptions, it is also agreed that people are more like-lv like-lv to obev and respect laws I J r - which they themselves have had ?ome part in bringing them into being and effect. The interests of the people are protected and Fafe-guarded by continous criticism critic-ism and observance towards any fictions taken by the government, actions which are publicised by rewspapers, radios, etc, making the people's interests more com- pletely safe-guarded. It is through the desire for Democracy Democ-racy and not for obedience towards to-wards a foreign sovereignty that the peoples of America gained their independence, their Constitution Consti-tution and their personal rights and freedom; and it is through Democracy that the peoples of America maintain, and will maintain their happiness, their fret dom, and their property from the aggressive influences of the outside world. Have not the Americans earned their freedom and happiness? the continuous struggle for existance of the early pioneers has reaped a g''den harvest; and to quote the word of Tennyson "To strive, to seek, to find, and NOT to yield." We have striven, sought, found, and now we must not, will not yield, ... the answer is Democracy, Democ-racy, the means by which a Great Nation is bonded together in unity, strength, and faith. The ornori unity of coming to this great country founded on these glorious principles appealed to me and is the main reason I left my native England, which I love, and came here to live. As Utah state winner of the "Voice of Democracy" Mr. Muir's tidnseription will automatically be entered in the national contest. con-test. At that contest, with judging judg-ing set for Jan. 4, four co-equal winners will be chosen and in addition to a $500 scholarship the four will spend a week in Washington, D. C. and in Colonial Colon-ial Williamsburg, Va., where tliey will participate in the De-I De-I n.ccracy Workshop, a national youth forum, and will observe governmental agencies in action, Mr. Muir won the Cedar City contest the previous week and was sponsored in the state con test by the local Jaycee organi ztion. i ... |
