Show Fourth Annual Invitational Tourney I Brings Strong Teams to Cedar City Six teams have been lined up and a schedule drawn by the Col-! lege of Southern Utah for the fourth annual Bronco Invitational Basketball Tournament, to be held in the fieldhouse on Monday, Mon-day, Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 21, 22 and 23. Two of the top junior college teams from California, San Bernardino Ber-nardino and Fullerton, will participate par-ticipate in the tourney with the remaining four teams from the northern and southern divisions of the Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, C S U and Dixie Jun- l ...111 - . .L. iur college win rtrprt-sem uitr southern division while Ricks College of Rexburg, Idaho, and Westminster College of Salt Lake City will represent the northern division. Ricks College was runner up to the C S U for I C A C honors List year and were beaten out of third place in the Bronco Tournament Tour-nament last year. However, the Vikings are expected to be a strong entry this year as they have several returning lettermen including Bryant Squires, last year's I C A C leading scorer pnd "Wif Hopkins, who was a popular tourney man last year. Westminster, a comparatively strong team this year has been beaten by both C S U and Dixie College in pre-season games thus far. C S U topped the Salt Lake City team in two encounters at Salt Lake City and at the local f'eldhouse. Dixie, topped the Westminster crew on the Dixie floor last week, but the margin of victory was comparatively slim and a neutral floor should about balance the two teams for the tournament play. San Bernardino and Fullerton are practically unknown this year as to their potential power but previous seasons would indicate indi-cate that thptf two feame vl-I II probably show the toughest competition com-petition at the tournament. About all that is known of the two teams this year, and they both finshed near the top in California Califor-nia last year, is that the Chaffey College coach, a pre season competitor com-petitor of both Dixie and CSU this season, indicated that the t'vo California teams are "loaded." C S U, Westminster, Ricks and Dixie teams comtcted in last year's tournament, which was v on by Compton Junior College of California, and their final standings were third, fourth, fifth and eighth, respectively. Chaffey College, another California team finished second last year. Three games will be played each day of the three-day affair, recording to Coach Cleo Petty. On Monday, Dec. 21, the initial frame of the tournament will pit Westminster against San Bernardino. Bernar-dino. Second game of the first night will see two I C A C rivals, Pixie and Ricks battle for the light to enter the championship champion-ship bracket. The nightcap will pit C S U against Fullerton. Dave Gates, assistant coach at CSU has drawn up a rather unique schedule which gives the loser of the C S U vs. Fullerton game a second opportunity to remain in the winning bracket. In other words the loser of that game will play the winner of the Westminster-San Bernardino game in the second round of play and the winner will move iiito the winning bracket, tackling tack-ling the winner of the Dixie-Ricks Dixie-Ricks game. All losers on the second evening, however, will move to the consolation bracket. All six teams will play each night. The complete schedule as outlined out-lined by the athletic department, will be printed on the back of the official programs with an explanation. ex-planation. Coach Petty indicated that the schedule was drawn with an eye to the success of the tournament, that being that the ; local team should remain in the winnlne bracket if possible. |
