Show United States Forest Service Advertises Five Million Feet of Saw timber for Sale Five million feet of ponderosa pine, Douglas fir. spruce and white fir sawtimber on the Dixie National forest is now being advertised ad-vertised for sale, according to Albert Albertson, forest supervisor. super-visor. The timber is on the East Fork of the Sevier River, and consists mainly of mature, diseased dis-eased or insect-infested trees. Under Forest Service marking rules, the timber stand will be left in good growing condition to provide another cut of timber in about 20 years. Mr. Albertson reported that a light selection of cutting of the timber stand harvests the old, slow-growing trees before they die, makes space for young trees to grow faster, and provides clearings for seedlings to get started. Removal of "bug" trees mistletoe and limb-rust trees helps to prevent fast spread of tree enemies. Great care is t cn to insure that watershed v. ues are not impaired, and erosion ero-sion control work on logeed-ovrr lands is now standard practice. ' Cooperative deposits by purchasers pur-chasers of National forest timber tim-ber pay for disposing of slash in gullies, seeding landings and skid roads to grass and shrnbty and for pruning and releasing future fu-ture crop trees. Utilization standards stand-ards insure that waste of wood products is kept at a nimirmun. |
