Show Large Crowds Enjoy Boxing Programs Staged By B. P. O. E. Record crowds enjoyed two excellent ex-cellent boxing cards staged by the Elks lodge last week end in connection connec-tion with the Veterans first annual race meet. The bouts were good, and the crowd was enthusiastic, so enthusiastic en-thusiastic lu fact that a noisy demonstration dem-onstration was staged over one de clsion and several ringslders exchanged ex-changed a few blows. Kent Hoyt, Cedar City battler, won the main event of the Thursday Thurs-day night card, when Warren Bush-head, Bush-head, Fredonla Indian, suffered a bad cut over his eye and was unable un-able to answer the bell for the Milrd round. Sunny Kelly of Portland won the main event of Saturday's card when his bout with Chuck Woodbury of Cedar City was stopped In the third round. Both boys proved very popu-ular popu-ular with the crowd, but Woodbury was not in good enough condition to absorb the visitor's body punches. Herb Craig, Arizona Indian, and Carlos Hartley of Hurricane, met in a return match in the semi-windup of the I li st card, this time over six rounds, and battled to a draw. A round of booing followed by fisticuffs resulted from the Judges' decision in the seiui-wlndup Saturday Satur-day night. The Judges ruled that Carlyle Sullivan of Hurricane had won a decision over Herb Craig, but the crowd seemed to think that Craig had won and demonstrated their dissatisfaction very lustily. Jay Mlddleton, popular Cedar City fighter, appeared In two bouts winning win-ning by a knockout over Kid Barton of Paragonah Thursday night, and getting a draw with Bob Huntington Hunting-ton of Cedar City Saturday night. Two other good bouts Saturday found Cardon Leigh and Lyman Smokey meeting In a good draw, and Council Olds and George Slack tangling In another. Bod Huntington and Connell Olds fought a draw on th first night's program. The bouts were staged under the direction of Ray NicholLs sfnd Leonard Leo-nard Smith, who' did an excullent Job of promoting and handling the two programs. |
