Show Aged Summit Pioneer Succumbs To Illness Of Several Months Herbert White, 83, prominent civic leader of Summit, and the lost of the original pioneers of the community, com-munity, died Wednesday afternoon following an illness of a few months from ailments Incident to age. An Elder In the LDS Church Mr. White had always been active In church affairs, and gave much leadership lead-ership to the erection of the present Summit Ward Chapel. He had been an active leader In all community development activities of Summit throughout his life. Born In Rotherham, Yorkshire. England, on March 17, 1864. a son of William and Ann Chapman White, he came to Utah with his parents and a brother and sister in 1865. The family crossed the ocean In the sailing vessel Bcllwood, and crossed the plains to Utah In a wagon drawn by an ox team. Mr. White began freighting be tween southern Utah and the mining min-ing towns of Southern Utah at the age of sixteen years. He later engaged en-gaged In farming and stockralslng. becoming known to' people of Iron County as "Uncle Herb". On December 7, 1897 he married Lillian Dalley of Summit In the St. Oeorge LDS temple.
