Show Fire Prevention Week In proclaiming Fire Prevention Week, to be observed beginning October Oc-tober 6 this year, President Truman said: "Whereas fires threaten thLs year to exact the greatest toll of lives and the greatest waste of ma- terlal resources that our nation has ever experienced; and "Whereas this destruction Is taking place at a time when the etitire world Is faced with distressing shortages short-ages of food and housing and nearly every commodity essential to speedy reconversion to a peacetime economy; and "Whereas the vast majority of destructive de-structive fires are preventable by the exercise of greater caution on the part of all our citizens . . .. "I ask every citizen to do his part by learning how to detect and eliminate all possible causes of firet In his home and in his business." Mr. Truman then requested that state and local governments, business busi-ness and labor organizations, churches, chur-ches, schools, the press, radio, and motion-picture industry and other such groups also cooperate "In a-rousing a-rousing the public to the awareness of the dreud threat of fires." The President has pointed to r terrible danger and an immediate need for action. Some 11,000 Americans Am-ericans will die one of the mast horrible deaths this year unlesr, fire's toll Ls controlled.
