Show Army Air Show Promises Thrills For Local People Residents are in for a great thrill Saturday when the Utah Wing il the C.vil Air Patrol presents i's spectacular air show at the Cedar City Airport. Planned in cooperation coopera-tion with the Army Air Forces, it will feature aerial demonstrations, and aerobatics by, the newest and fastest fighters In the field ot aviation, avia-tion, it was announced today by Colonel Joseph S. Bcrgln, Utah Wing Commander. This great array of the Army's best planes will be at the Cedar City Airport all ("ay Saturday. Beginning Be-ginning at 10:00 a. m. there will be a ground exhibit, followed by a mammoth air show at 12:30 p. m. There will be an admission charge at the airport. Main attractions will be the Lockheed Lock-heed P-80 "Shooting Star", the A. A. F.'s sleek, flush-rivited, Jet propelled pro-pelled fighter and, the "Queen of all Heavy Bombers", the B-29. An unusual feature of the P-80 Is the necessity for a small, lightweight light-weight refrigeration unit to cool the pressurized cabin from 175 to 75 degrees de-grees F., due to the heat created by friction when air passes over it's waxed fuselage at near supersonic super-sonic speeds. Another unique feature of the "Shooting Star" is that while knifing knif-ing its way through the air at speeds In excess of 500 miles per hour, the air becomes so rough that the pilots are Jolted violently. As a safety precaution, a specially designed de-signed crash helmet made of plastic plas-tic is worn over the regular flying helmet. This protects the pilot's head from the low bubble canopy when he Is performing earobatlcs or executing sharp maneuvers. The Boeing B-29 "Superfortress" 130,000 pounds of metal, rubber and gasoline, wrote a new and historical histori-cal chapter last week with its lion-stop lion-stop flight from Honolulu to Cairo, Egypt. . Tt make the B-29 one of the ea.lle.st bombers to handle, there are over 150 different electric motors mot-ors connected to more than eleven and a half miles of wire. Four Wright Cyclone 2200 horse power engines drive four-bladed propel-lors propel-lors to give this plane a speed over 300 miles an hour. The propellors are so large (16 feet 6 Inches) they must be slowed down by 35100 reduction re-duction gears to keep the top speed under the speed of sound, preventing excessive vibration. |
