Show Motorists Warned About Anti-Freeze Solutions by ODT ' Maintenance specialists of the Office of Defense Transportation :oday cautioned operators of all kinds of motor vehicles against the use of harmful salt or oil preparations prepar-ations as radiator antl-freeze. Quoting from pamphlet on "Cool, tng System Cleaning. Flushing, Rust Prevention and Antl-Freeze", prepared pre-pared for the ODT by the Society of Automotive Engineers, it was declared many solutions are not satisfactory. Oils, sugars and inorganic salt solutions are unsatisfactory for one reason or another." It was declared. "Principal objections to Inorganic salt antt-freea materials, such as calcium or other chloride, for example, ex-ample, are electrical conductivity and corrosive effects. "Leakage of salt antl-freeze solutions so-lutions on the ignition system parts will cause serious shortage of the electrical circuits. To date, no chem- I - I leal treatment is known that will Inhibit salt solutions against corrosion cor-rosion In the cooling system, even though they may produce satlsfac- 1 tory corrosion results in laboratory ' tests. Another- objection reported on salt antl-freeze Is the possibility 'of crystal formation In the radiator, radia-tor, which restricts circulation." Salo'oX antl-freeze solutions compounded com-pounded with Inorganic salts or petroleum dls. Mates was stopped ' January 20. 1943, but su:h materials still are being offered for sale in some localities. ODT officials said. |
