Show IT is certainly a matter of congratu- latjon to tho people of Southern H Utah and particularly to residents of H; "Washington county where bad roads B- have been such a serious handicap in H the past, that a day of better roads has H dawned upon us. Little by little, for B the past three years tho rough places H have been made smooth, the steep Hv grades reduced, the sand covered with H u capping of clay, and much of the H clay topped with shale, lime rock or B other Buitablo substance, making tho B roads as a whole infinatcly better. B Those doubting Thomases who were B -wont to say that good roads were a B , luxury intended to benefit owners of B automobiles only, have been convinced B to tlio contrary, and can now see that B good roads are just as much in the in- B terests of the teamster, the farmer B and the common laborer as they are B of tho automobilist, The work dono B tho past winter by the state convicts K has very much extended the improved T'V area, and have made it possible now to Hi get as far as Hurricane in good shape, B and in a reasonable length of time. B Three hours and a half is only a com- B- iortable running time on this route B now, and when the largo bridge is I erected just this side of Toquorvillo 9 and a few other streams spanned, this C time can be" very materially reduced. BB Tho convicts are now giving somo MM more attention to the Bellevuo black B ridgo dugway, and places that have fl proved more or leas dangerous in the B past are being improvod. A strong B effort is being made to get the roads B in shape for tho opening of tho Grand B Canyon routo June 1. In Iron and B Beaver counties, too, tho road men are B busy. Tho road is now graded be- B jtween Parowan and Paragonah, and a ' strong force of road builders, under Commissioner Hendrickson, aro now building from Buckhorn to tho Beaver county line. With tho aid of tho convicts, con-victs, Beaver county expects to havo its road all graded on tho highway by the appointed time, and while the roads will not bo as good this year as they will bo next, when tho ground gets better settled, it is expected that they will bo in a fairly satisfactory condition all the way through. Thero is nothing that means more to tho development of a country than good roads, a proof of which is the increased in-creased activities along agricultural, horticultural and various other lines of industry,. But the first essential in tho development of a country is an easy means ingress and egress, which in tho nbsence of railroads is obtained by means of good highways. |
