Show j FOR SUNLESS WINDOWS I By EBEN E. REXFORD. i It'ioftcn happens that tho woman I who 'loves plants haB no sunny win- .j dow In which to grow thom and under 1 tho Impression that they cannot bo j"( successfully grown without sunshlno, '; she does not attempt tholr cultivation, IthiiB depriving herself of a great deal of pleasure, especially in tho winter. There Is no reason why tho lover of plants should bo without their company com-pany In tho winter, provided of courso that tho temperaturo of tho room can bo regulated to keep outjtbe frost, and Bomo of the plants that can, bo grown - i rwfT-rirf t j A Few Blooms la the Houso Add a - Cheering Note. p In windows that are without sunshine I J " aro among our most desirable ones for houso culture. Flrston tho list I would place the Dostou fern. Nearly overyono is familiar fa-miliar with this plant. It requires only tho ordinary attention. Olvo It a soil of garden loam with enough coarse, sharp sand worked into It to mako it friable, u liberal but not an oxcosslve amount of wator and a temperaturo v, several degrees above tho frost point und anyono may bo reasonably sure of success with it. It does nt do very well, however, in stcam-hcatcd, gas-llghtcd rooms. No plants will flourish under such conditions, con-ditions, though many will livo on indefinitely in-definitely under them. Tho uspidlBtra is about tho only plant I would dare to rccommond tc thoso living in rooms heated and light ed as mentioned above. This plan) has almost an iron constitution, which enables it to withstand Influences that would soon kill most plants. It soeme to caro nothing for tho sunshlno and therefore is excellently adapted to cul tlvatlon in sunless rooms. If not subject sub-ject to tho debilitating efff-ct of steanc heat it will mako a most luxuriant growth and its rich dark green leave! will afford a vast amount of pleasure While It is ablo to withstand untavor ablo conditions better than othoi plants, it is always grateful fd good caro and tho plants that aro cared for well aro always tho ones that give tho best satisfaction, keep in mind. English Ivy Is an old favorite. Twined up around tho window it 1b a beautiful sight to see. I know of no vino having moro attractive foliage. |
