Show B Absolute Unfairness. f Ono of our contemporaries in Kane county, in H ' an article on tho rolativo qualifications of tho can- H didatcs for attorney general, proceods to attack A. fl R, Barnes, tho present incumbent, because ho was H' not born in Utah, and urges that P. T. Fnrns- m worth, Jr., dosorves tho support of tho Republican B party for tho solo reason that ho happened to bo B born within tho imaginary lines defining' this H state. B Wo can hardly find words to oxprcss our dis- B gust for such tommyrot. Tho nowspaper that is- B n't big enough and broad enough to accept a man B for what ho is hia manhood, his honor, his abil- B ity, his faithfulness, does not deserve tho support B of tho public, Perhaps it nover occurred to the B management of tho paper in question, but such a B policy, if followed, would doprivo every pioneer in B tnQ upbuilding of tho state, of any opportunity to B serve the stato in which ho has nmdo his homo for H tho greater portion of his lifo, the state which he B loves, which he has hepled to devolop, and in B whoso progress ho may havo been a strong factor. B Such a rulo would prevent tho pioneer from B holding an office of public trust in tho state, but B h8 8on might do so: inferring that the son is more B deserving than tho father, regardless of qualifica- B tions, or any of tho othor attributes that go to B make a good citizen and a capablo public official. B Moreover, such a policy would virtually take B the rights of citizonship from tho thousands of B ,non aU( women who havo romoved to Utah within B tn0 mst thirty years, and by industry, thrift, hon- B csy, and tho exerciso of their talents, have helped B to bring tho stato to the forefront in wealth, influ- B ence and knowledge. In ovoiy community, men B nmv UQ found who arc giving of their time and B their money unsparingly, in an effort to assist the B whole people. And yet, tho Kane county editor B with tho circumscribed conscienco would deny B them the right to hold public office, if some nativo H born aspirant should come forward. B Wo nlV0 it from one member of tho Supreme B Court that Attorney General Barnes Ins done more H to assist tho court than any other man who ever H held the position; seems that he has had a con- B scientious desire to do his full duty. Then again, B lc mxs succeeded in collecting more inheritance B tax during his term of ofiico than was collected H before in tho entire existence of tho state. But B what d tncso things matter to tho wide-ayakc(?) H progressive (?) editor from Kane county? The B state of Utah is soon to enjoy ono of tho finest H capital buildings in tho country, and it will be 'r h l, , , paid for almost entirely by funds received as inheritance in-heritance taxes. But as the aforesaid editor does not need an office in the capital building, doubtless ' he feels that the stato coukl g well do without one, a box car might serve the purpose. As to Mr. Farnsworth, we have nothing but the highest commendation. We believe him to be a man as sincere as Mr. Bamw arid equally as capablo. cap-ablo. If he should receive the nomination and be elected, we doubt not that he would acquit himself creditably. He is a good lawyer and has made a good official, but wo should like to see him make tho campaign on his merits and not by arousing personal prejudices. |
