Show 'V ;MrrERS POLITICAL Candidates are beginning to appear for the various county offices, but to date nearly all who have been mentioned are aspiring aspir-ing jfor places on the Republican ticket.; It is said that Sheriff Corry will be a candidate for re-election. Herbert Haight, our jovial, good-natured city recorder, has been strongly urged to accept the nomination for county assessor, asses-sor, but to a Record reported Mr. Haightstated that he would not be a candidate for that office. J. R. Rickards, the present incumbent, incum-bent, has expressed himself as not seeking the nomination for another term. Mrs. Mary A. Gunn, the present pres-ent county recorder, will not be a candidate for renomination,. according to rumors in political circles. If there are any aspirants aspir-ants at present for the office of recorder, we have not heard of them. For 6flicers of this judicial district, dis-trict, several names are mentioned. men-tioned. O. A. Murdock of Beaver Beav-er has announced his candidacy for the nomination on the Republican Repub-lican ticket for district judge. There aro rumors a plenty that Geo. B. Greenwood of Millard county has ono eye on the nomination, nomi-nation, and while Mr. Greenwood Green-wood has not confirmed the rumor, rum-or, the prospects are good that a warm contest will be waged for tho nomination for judge. On tho Democratic ticket, the present pres-ent judge, Hon. Joshua Greenwood Green-wood of Beaver, is again seeking tho nomination, so that the contest con-test for district judge will be interesting, in-teresting, both in the conventions conven-tions and in the general election. For distinct httornoy, E. H. HUinuofPt.city. wUanowholdo the office, will seek renomination on the Republican ticket. Mr. Ryan has made a splendid record in the office, is conscientious ind capable, and will make a splendid splen-did showing at the convention. Chas. C. Y, Higgins, city attorney attor-ney of St. GeorgOf is boing mentioned men-tioned by his friends for the position, po-sition, and Attorney Geo. R. Lund, also of tho Dixie city, has announced his candidacy for the office. We have heard of no aspirants as-pirants among theother political parties for the office. Undor the reapportionment of congressmen, Utah will bo entitled en-titled to elect two congressmen-at-large this year instead of one. It is said that Congressman Howell is a candidate to succeed himself. Others who would not "refuso" tho nomination (we have the word of their friends that they would accept if urged) are Parley P. Christonsen, Harry (Hurry) S. Joseph, E. Marks and Benner X. Smith, all of Salt I Lako City and one or two of the stalwarts from Sanpete county. It is rumored that Judge Knox of Beaver is an aspirant alo, but to date we havo nof been iible to have the rumor confirmed. Parley Par-ley P. Ohristenson is a "veteran" "veter-an" candidate for congressman, . and although he has bee n turned I down by his party with unfail- ing regularity, it is our candid opinion that he would make j about as good a representative jas any )f the others whose names j have been mentioned. When it comes to talking loud and long, "Hurry"J oseph can't be beat-but, beat-but, wouldn't he talk himself to death if elected, there being little lit-tle else for a representative to do but talk while congress is in session. For governor on the Republican Republi-can ticket, Hon. Wm. Spry is a candidate to succeed himself. Stephen II, Love, former presi- dent of the state senafe, has hied his hat into the ring, and says that he is in the contest to stay until the finish. Ho is using us-ing the recently organized Native Na-tive Sons to boost his candidacy. Within the last week, W. N. Williams, for several terms a member of the state senate from Salt Lake county, has been mentioned men-tioned as a possible candidate. If we've got to have a Republican Republi-can for governor, the best man, in our opinion, of all who have so far announced themselves, is Governor Spry. He has made tho otnto avcal governor and deserves de-serves tho nomination by his party. Tne delegates of the Democratic Demo-cratic party from Utah to the national convention at Baltimore are making efforts to secure seats at the Republican convention conven-tion which meets at Chicago June 18. They expect to attend the latter, and then go on to too convention of thoir own party, which convenes on the 25th. The price of seats to witness the Republican Re-publican convention is $50 each, and they are hard to get at that price. Wm. Houchen, deputy assessor, asses-sor, has announced himself as a candidate. He has had considerable consid-erable experience and will no doubt make a strong fight in the convention. ii i i m ! |
