The i attendance at the exhibition up to the present approached a million-and a f half. . i . I . f At Hessenford village, Liskeard, on "Wednesday. John Moon, aged 10, and f "V. I A new rule under the intermediate . educational act provides that in the programme of examination for 1903 in Knglish composition for the junior i grade, "Scott, the Talisman," may be I selected in substitution for "Scott, the i I Fortunes of Nigel," and that "Measure j I for Measure" be omitted from "Lamb Talcs from Shakespeare." The mackerel fishing along Cork coast "this season is not turning out as successful as had been anticipated. The fishermen put to sea very early in the season, and signs were not then wanting of fruitful results. So far, however, these have not been realized, the catches being very small, and the fish poor in size and quality. The spring fishing this year was remarkably remarka-bly Rood, the fishermen, who are for the most part also small farmers, having hav-ing had a most prosperous time. It is a great disappointment to them that the .autumn mackerel fishing has been a failure more or less, still, fishing in other departments is prosecuted with much success. About 3;30 o'clock on Thursday an accident of a particularly sad nature occurred at the Cork terminus of the Great Southern & Western railway. It would appear that a man named John Higgins, principal driver of the Imperial Im-perial hotel busses, was in the act of lowering some luggage from the top of his car. While so engaged, standing on the roof, he held on with one hand to one of the straps used to tie down the trunks, and lowering the luggage with the other. The strap unfortunately gave way, with the result that the man was thrown to the ground on his head, death being instantaneous. Much sympathy is felt with the family of the unfortunate man, who was much respected re-spected by all who knew him, and the directors of the Imperial hotel will feel his loss- greatly, and will find some difficulty- in replacing so conscientious and upright a servant. A second accident occurred at the Cork terminus of the Great Southern & Western railway on Thursday. Some excursionists were returning to Ken-mare Ken-mare after visiting the. exhibition. While waiting for their train at the station, and when in the vicinity of one of the lifts, one of the party remarked to another named' Lyons, who was standing on the lift, that he would let him down. He immediately did so, and Lyons in attempting to get off the lift, got his foot torn off. He was immediately imme-diately conveyed to the North infirmary, infirm-ary, where, on examination, it was found that portion of the leg would have . to be- amputated. |
