With solemn and inspiring ceremony cere-mony the mission that was inaugurated at St.N Patrick's church eight months ago was renewed Sunday morning. The attendance was immense, the spacious spa-cious house of worship being packed with worshipers, and the welcome that was given the devout Redemptorist fathers on their return to Butte was most encouraging for the success of their efforts in concluding the present mission. . , . . . . The altar presented a beautiful ap pearance with special ' decorations of roses. A striking object inside the altar al-tar rail was a great cross of severe aspect. as-pect. In color the cross was black, and it was draped with a white cloth, these colors being always present in j the services of a Catholic mission. In front of this cross was the pulpit, from which will be preached the fervent appeals ap-peals to the people to repent of their sins and be saved. The mission was formally opened with a processional. Father De Siere and the local priests, accompanied by a number of choir boys In white, proceeded pro-ceeded from-the altar to the door of the church, and escorted the four mission mis-sion fathers down the center aisle to the altar. When the altar was reached, the pastor pas-tor of the church formally welcomed the missionaries on their return to renew re-new the mission that had been so prolific pro-lific f good results to the church at its inception eight ' months ago. The belief was expressed that through the zeal and experience of the devout priestly visitors, the mission that was about to open would be the most successful suc-cessful that was ever given in Butte. After a solemn high mass was sung, the opening sermon of the mission was delivered by Rev. Joseph N. Nier-man, Nier-man, the superior of the mission. In an earnest and forcible manner, that profoundly impressed all his hearers, the learned speaker explained to the people the object of the renewal of the mission. It was stated that it was first intended to encourage those who have remained faithful' "to the good resolves and promises that they made at the last mission;. to raise up those who have relapsed - into indifference and perhaps grievous sin, and to give those "who did; notattend the mission last spring another opportunity to partake par-take of the blessines that are bestowed on the- people by God on those, holy occasions. - ' During this week the mission will be for women.. During next week will be the men's mission, and the third and concluding week-will be for men and women who have. not been able to attend at-tend the opening services of the mission. mis-sion. Rev. Nierman will be assisted by Rev. Thomas Fagan. Rev. Walter Polk and Rev. Charles Maddox. The singing by the choir yesterday was very fine and added greatly to the beauty and impressiveness of the services. |
