Show THE CAMPAIGN. I i ; 'I lie presidential campaign draws to a close. The j candidates and party workers have presented the ; j issues involved, and the people are about to express ! : their will at the polls. May they be guided by an j ; intelligent interest in the welfare of the nation I ; "hen they go to Ihe polls to proclaim their will. i ; a-v tae rcsult bring comfort to the victors and to J those who suffer defeat. And may the people of the j i country unite to make the next administration one I I'M which will be filled with good things for all the i j ' people of the country. j I And may the candidates who meet defeat not . I j ; only tnose who are running for the highest offices I ' of the nation, but even to the last fellow on the township or village ticket be successful in finding ! i ; a job, and may they bury their disappointment in I" , hard work and reflect on the criticism which they I j ' will escape by meeting defeat. For though there is I . great joy in winning at anything upon which one j j ; k sets his heart, let those who are defeated take com- j ' j ; fort in the thought that they are of the minority I i and are free to express disapproval of every act I and every omission of their successful rivals. j And may the successful candidates be suddenly V endowed with that rare intelligence which knows j j what to do and when to do it that they may eon- I j found their enemies and bring upon themselves the . I ;.. j : plaudits of the whole people except their defeated I rivals, for that would be asking too much. May !' i they enter upon their duties with a high ideal, and may that ideal last at least through the first day after they are inaugurated. And when the high j- k ideal is shattered, may they get down and do the j best they know how under the circumstances. H ' We trust the losers in-the coming election will , ' prove good losers, and that the winners will prove j generous winners. And when the time for another i election rolls around, we trust the cabbage crop ' will be as plenteous as it was this fall for what ' l would a campaign be without a generous supply of I campaign cigars ? |
