Show THE POPE OX IRELAND. J. Dillon. M. P.. and Mrs. Dillon have been staying stay-ing in Pome, and had a private audience with the Pope. His Holiness received the distinguished visitors vis-itors with warmth and cordiality. His Holiness' references to Ireland were especially significant. He first spoke of his particular affection for the Irish people and added in an emphatic manner: '"The Irish leaders are the best judges of what is right and good for their people.'' This is a.s inul-h as to say that the Pope disas-. sociates himself froni foreign rule in Ireland, which is, as everyone knows, anything but broad-based broad-based upon the people's will." "t is well known that the Pope is a democrat and a subscriber to the ' doctrine that the voice of the people is the supremo law. The Pope's significant words to the Diilcns are especially notable in view kof the recent exposure expo-sure of the English intrigue at ihe Vatican, con-, nected with the Persieo episode. The present Pope evidently wishes it to be made known that such in-' in-' triguing will never again be tolerated by the Vatican Vati-can authorities, but .that in Irish affairs they will be guided by the "voice of the Irish bishops and people. The Persieo correspondence is being widely wide-ly commented upon in the continental press. |
