Show KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS TO VISIT SALT LAKE Local Committee Makes Preparations to Receive the Throng Which Will Stop Here. The local council of the Knights' of Columbus is making preparations to re-I re-I ceive the throng of delegates and vis itors who will pass through Salt Lake to attend the annual conclave and reunion re-union of the order at Los Angeles. The event will last one week, beginning June 5, and will include visits and receptions re-ceptions at different places on the I'a-cilio I'a-cilio coast. ' Headquarters Established. Salt Lake council lias already established estab-lished headquarters at the Wilson, and everything will be done to show the visitors all points of interest in and about the city. The committee of entertainment en-tertainment embraces Charles F. Porter, Por-ter, William P. O'Meara. Frank E. McGurrin Mc-Gurrin and George J. Gibson. New Yorkers Coming. A special train from Buffalo, X. Y.. will arrive here on May 31 and remain over one day. It will be luxuriously equipped and consist of five sleepers, dining and composite smoking and barber chair. This train will be followed fol-lowed by a special from Is'ew York City and yet another from points in Ohio. The fourth train will also be a special from New England, containing the national na-tional officers, but this will reach- Salt Lake on the return trip. Before returning re-turning to their eastern homes, most of the delegates and excursionists will visit Portland. The local council is advised ad-vised that many of the order .going west and skipping Salt Lake will return re-turn this way and be guests of the order, or-der, here for a day or more. Going or coming, the knights are desirous of be-i be-i holding the wonders of the Saintly City, j Will Be Great Parade. On the evening of the exemplification of the fourth degree at Los Angeles there will be a grand parade of about 4,000 knights. Another event will be the laying of the corner-stone of the new cathedral. Also a reception by the chamber of commerce. Senator Flint of California and Senator Thomas Carter of Montana, both members of the order, will be the ceneral figures on that occasion; Is New Organization. The Knights of Columbus is an organization or-ganization of comparatively recent inception, in-ception, and differs from all other societies so-cieties of Catholic laymen. .Its ritual bears some resemblance, it is said, to those of the mystic secret societies. For a time its promotion was discouraged by a few of the Catholic hierarchy on this account. Since Cardinal Satolli, the pope'a representative, so warmly commended it upon his recent visit to this country, ecclesiastical opposition ceased. Is an American Order. It is essentially an American order, and appeals to the best intellect and 1 patriotism of the American Catholic, i Today it numbers 130,000 members', with ! councils in thirty-four states and in Canada, Cuba and Porto Rico. George J. Gibson of Salt Lake, state organizer, will represent the states of Utah. Idaho and Nevada in the national nation-al council. |
