Show Can it be possible, or is it even intellectually conceivable, that the Catholic Church, in her humble hum-ble origin humanly speaking possessed all the wisdom of the ages And yet this marvelous institution, insti-tution, whose elementaryV foundation was a handful of illiterate and uncultured fishermen has, in all ages since her foundation, irresistably. appealed to the highest, most iacred heart and soul-emotions of the choicest spirits the most highly developed men and women of the race. Either has she, seemingly seeming-ly with a gentle passivity, commanded their unreserved un-reserved love and homage or else ha she forcibly wrung from, them their unwilling admiration and praise. In the latter class are such conspicuous examples ex-amples as Macaulcy and Hawthorne and all' true poets-natures prophets and seers who were denied de-nied the blessedness of the true faith by having their soul-consciousness poisoned in its fountain-head fountain-head by the virus of error and prejudice instilled into their budding iatellccts in their childhood, or who blunted their moral and spiritual perceptions by sensual indulgence in the years of their 'youth the soul's novitiate. Only thc spiritually shallow shal-low and superficial are disposed to view the Catholic Catho-lic Church as the product of the brains of deluded or designing men and devoid of all higher spirituality, spirit-uality, . 4 . |
