Show Gift to a Brooklyn Hospital. Hugh McLaughlin, Brooklyn's retired Democratic Demo-cratic leader, has for many years beeen an industrious indus-trious collector of postage stamps of all nations. The entire collection, which now numbers 1,021,000, has been douated to the managers of St. Mary's hospital, Brooklyn, and will be one of the prizes to be contested for at the forthcoming annual fair of the institution. In talking of the maher, Mr. McLaughlin said: " 'He that giveth to the poor lendth to the Lord.' The text has been constantly in my mind of late. Tou see,T am getting a little old and I am more inclined to think on things religious than I used to be. I got this habit of collecting stamps just the same as I got the domino and baseball habits. hab-its. When I told my friends that I was collecting . stamps for amusement, they consented to help me. They cut the stamps out of their envelopes and put them up 'in little packages of 100 each and sent theni'to me. Politicians? Oh, yes. I suppose a good many of them were politicians. I do little things for them, and naturally they did little things for me. I suppose the collection was got together by several thousand persons." |
