Show (The two appended tiery articles, under the captions of "Colorado Horrors" and "An Outrage,'' were written and sent in for publication by an esteemed es-teemed friend, whose Americanism is doeply wounded by the happenings of the past week. Editor.) - COLORADO HORRORS. The deplorable state of affairs in Colorado cannot can-not but send a chill through the heart of every loyal American citizen. Why is it that such things happen in a free country? Is it the men? If so, why arc there not such things going on in every state in the Union? There are men, the same identical iden-tical kind of men, employed in the same identical manner in many stales of the' Union. But we fear there are not such governors, and no such tin soldiers thank God for it! When American citizons are driven from bullpen to bullpen, and hounded out of this place and that, by militarism, what may we look for but anarchy? When men went there to try to restore order they were thrown into military prisons or ordered out of the state. Wonder what the people of Colorado are doing? Are they all playing a Rip Van Winkle act ? It would seem that with such able, manly men as there must surely be in the big state of Colorado something can be done to put a stop to this, or rather, long ago something could have been done to avoid the awful happenings of the last few months. From the reports that come from Colorado Colo-rado it does not appear that from the first it was necessary to have the militia. Since it has taken possession, the courts of the state are powerless and the "tin soldiers" have things their own way. Any time, at any place on earth, when men are treated like dogs, or worse, there must be anarchial results. Foster the beast in them aind you mu3t have the acts of beasts. Why is it "a republic is so successful? Because men are trusted and treated treat-ed like men, not like beasts. Where were the militia at the time of the dynamiting dyna-miting ? We do not read of any being killed, only non-union men. If they are not there to protect property and non-Union men, what are they there for? What are they doing? Is there not such-a thing as a governor being impeached and a soldier being dishonorably discharged? It seems the authorities au-thorities who do the impeaching and discharging arc neglecting some pressing duties , for surely there is work in Colorado for them. j AN OUTRAGE. During the last week the dispatches from two different parts of the country brought the news to U3 that two United States soldiers Vho made efforts ef-forts to escape were killed by the sentries. . It does seem needlessly cruel to kill a man, and that man an American, soldier who has voluntarily joined the ranks to be ready at any' time to defend his country. We applaud the man who shoots down in cold blood the escaping desperado or lesser criminal, crim-inal, but it does seem as if an effort could be made to shoot to maim or halt, not to kill. After all, the world is very small, and the chances are the men would have been caught, or, more probably, prob-ably, given themselves up willingly, when they came to their senses. In time of war no fate, of course, seems too hard to be meted out to a deserter, but we are at peace now with all the world at least that's what we are told (although Colorado .looks bad)-and at any stage of any game a little humanity docs no harm.
