Show Hpr the You know, we've got a big job to do right here in Franklin Frank-lin county. Our government has set a quota for us in its War Savings Program. The amount of War Bonds and Stamps that we must buy is a lot bigger than we have been buying. Now, we don't want to fall down on this job while every other county in America equals and exceeds ex-ceeds its quota. Every citizen of this county must make up his mind to buy War Savings Bonds and Stamps to the limit in order to meet this quota set for us by the United States Government. Ten per cent, fifteen per cent, yes, and even twenty-five per cent of our incomes must be used for the purchase of War Savings Bonds and Stamps. This isn't a two per cent war, my friends. This is a total war that will take a good many billions of our dollars. Now let's get in there and show the rest of the United States that Franklin county recognizes the needs of its government Buy War savings Bonds and Stamps to the limit, all you can possibly afford. Make your pledge now and double it every ev-ery month hereafter until Franklin county goes over the top In this drive. If you are one of the few ''Doubtng Thomases" afraid 1 to buy bonds and stamps be cause of the unpatriotic fear Unci Sam won't be able to pay off, perhaps the words of Congressman Jerry Voorhis of California may help to change' your mind. The Congressman, a non-politician who gets our vote as the out-Btanding out-Btanding young Congressman in Washington, has a sure-fire plan that oddly enough gets support from both Democrats and Republicans. Republi-cans. With gold off the market our legal tender has been reduced to credit warrants we can't take a :. five-dollar bill to the bank and de mand gold we can, but the bank would probably laugh at us, or call the "padded wagon." Voorhis' plan is to issue more currency (if necessary) and take it back in through taxes, etc. We have requested that he forward for-ward his proposed program in detail, de-tail, and then will print it for all of you to read. It must be good, because both Democrats and Republicans have endorsed it. At least it isn't a crackpot plan that threatens to bankrupt Uncle Sam. -i The Anti-Tobacco League has a friend in the recent suggestion sug-gestion of adding more taxes to tobacco, alcoholic beverages, theatres, etc., as another means of Increasing the government's revenue. No doubt many would find a way to break themselves o.' the cigarette habit if the price of a pack is Jumped to 20c There probably prob-ably would be fewer drunks, less patronage of theatres, etc., and the lupporters of the plan believe that - this would improve our morals con- siderably A danger, however, is the probability proba-bility of "bootleg" smokes and drinks then the government would ' have a real Job on its hands . . . Rnd Al Cnpone would be in our hair again. n o |
