Show OPERA, "PIRATES OF PENZANCE" TO j One of Gilbe.-i and Sullivan's popular operas "The Pirates of Penzance" or "The Slave of Duty" ! is scheduled as this year's produc- j ton of the Preston High Music department. de-partment. This comic opera was chosen for its reputation as an "audience appealer," as it will delight de-light the young as well as tht, adults with a variety of fun, intermingled inter-mingled with romance trom ben-ning ben-ning to the end of the opera. This opera is one of the most popular works of the famous English Eng-lish Compers, W. S. Gilbert am. Arthur Sullivan; its first presentation presen-tation was held at the Opera Co-i-ique on April 3, 1SS0. This opera is enjoying a successful season in New York this year. The story and mustc is delightfully delight-fully entertaining and filled with the lore of the pirates ot old. The plot is centered about Frederic, a pirate apprentice, who must serve as such until his 21st birthday, be- tause of an error made by His nurse when lie was a child. Frederic swears revenge, but upon the day of his release as Pirate Apprentice, ' he learns that he was born on leap year and thus is only five years old. This gives rise to many amus. ing situations. After completion of the tryouts early next week, the opera will gu into full production. Any high school students interested in participating par-ticipating in the opera should see Mr.- Lundquist immediately. The tentative date for presentation of the opera is February 27. |
