Show Oneida Stake Gold And Green Ball Tuesday, January 20th Murder Trial To Be Held In Preston Defendant To Enter Plea Move From Caribou Permits Trial To Change of Venu Friday, January 16, will mark the opening of the first murder trial to be held within the courts of Franklin county since Oneida and Franklin counties were divided divid-ed in 1913. At this time Mrs. Grace Coppard, 43, of Soda Springs and accused slayer of Paul Tipton, 62, Soda Springs garage owner, wiil enter her plea to the murder charge before District Judge Jay L. Downing. Down-ing. Mrs. Coppard appeared at the Preston court house Monday afternoon after-noon with her attorney, II. H. Swansou, to receive formal notice of the charges after a change of venu from Caribou county was granted to the defense and the suit was filed in Franklin county by R. G. Dygert, Caribou county prosecutor. prose-cutor. The defense obtained a change of venu on the plea that Caribou residents already considered the defendant guilty of the charges and that an impartial trial there wns Impossible. In Franklin county the same legal representatives will conduct the proceedings while the jury will be made up of Franklin county residi'i ts. i Judge Downing wiil ia!t the dato for the trial and the impaneling oi the jury after hearing the plea oi Mrs. Coppard Friday at 2 p. m Attorney General Beit Miller, will assist Attorney Dygert in the pros-secution. pros-secution. Mrs. Coppard is accused of shooting shoot-ing Paul Tipton on August 23, 1941, and dumping his body into Uit Soda Springs reservoir where it was found August 27. The defendant defen-dant was taken into custody that evening at Pocatello on order of the Caribou county authorities. |
