Show Farm Program Will Stress All Out Conservatinn The Triple-A Farm program for I'jZZ places greater stress than ever on conservation, Quince Rice, chairman of the Franklin county . AA committee, pointed out this week. The Food for Freedom program In which all farmers in the county i are participating cadis for production produc-tion adjustments to meet the war food needs of America and her allies, Mr. Rice said. Production of foods rich in protein and vitamins, and stabilization o surplus crops such as wheat, cotton and tobacco are equally important in making fullest possible use of the man! and machine-pow.er American farmers far-mers will have at hand during the coming year. To waste labor, machines and soil fertility to produce more than a minimum of such surplus crops, as wheat would be a terrible mistake mis-take when efficient production counts as much as it does in this war, the chairman said. The 1942 Triple - A program, i which combines farm and range conservation programs for the first time, makes Che use of 20 per cent of the. cropland on each farm for "soil-conserving" crops or practices one of the requirements for qualifying quali-fying for AAA payments on wheat and potatoes. Farmers are .expected to devote one-fifth of their farm's cropland acreage to growing grasses or legumes, le-gumes, pasture grasses, forest tvfies- fi'sen manure. Austrian win- ter peas or vetch if approved by the county committee, noxious weed control if on irrigated cropland, crop-land, or protected summer fallow on not more than 'half the qualifying qualify-ing acreage when the balance of the qualifying acreage is devoted to one or more of the other uses Only other requirement for qualifying qual-ifying for wheat or potato conservation conser-vation payments is planting within 1942 acreage allotments for those crops, as set up by faraner-com-mitteemen The balance of the farm acreage may be used for pro duction of any other crop desired. The "20 per cent conserving:- requirement re-quirement will make little difference differ-ence on farms in irrigated areas where a substantial percentage of the cropland normally is used for production of forage crops. However, How-ever, on dryland farms, it will require re-quire farmers to take active stepa in building their soil if they wish to participate in the 1942 AAA farm program. o o |
