Show One Treasure "Hoard" Beyond Reach of Man Not all the buried treasure la at the bottom of the sea or hidden In bosom of the earth. There is one hoard, quite lost to the world, at least, secreted 555 feet straight up In the air ! During the work on the shaft of the Washington monument, Superintendent Superin-tendent Patrick H. McLaughlin found money on three occasions near the site of the job. In each case the "find" was a 3-cent piece. He kept the coins until December 6, 'lSS4, the day when the 3,300-pound capstone and 100-ounce aluminum cap surmounting sur-mounting the latter were placed In position. Just before the metal tip was being lowered, he slipped the coins beneath it. Others standing on the small platform plat-form at the top reached in their pockets and did likewise. So several coins and one $5 bill rest at this minute at the top of the monument, with only the great aluminum tip at the apes and the blue sky above them. Top and bottom now, the monument monu-ment contains a value beyond the mere stone and metal it contains. The official list of articles placed In the cornerstone notes: "All coins of the United States from the eagle to the half-dime, inclusive; a cent of 17S3 of the United States of America, Amer-ica, and an American dollar." |
