A dispute over the j .southern boundary of Texas ended in 'an attack on Fort Brown by the j Mexicans on April 2G, 1846. One officer offi-cer and eight men were killed. The United States acquired what is ,now California, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico and Arizona, and portions of Colorado and Wyom'ng, and paid '. Mexico $35,750,000. Thus the Pacific ocean became the western boundary of the United States. I The 54-gun frigate, United States, commanded by Stephen Decatur during dur-ing the War of 1812, was searching 'for British shipping- when it met the , English frigate, Macedonian, of 49 guns, commanded by John S. Carden.j off the Canary Islands. There were seven Americans on the Macedonian and they were forced to fight against their country. The United States was better armed but was slower than the Macedonian. The sails of the Macedonian were shot away and she lay helpless, rolling her gun decks under the swells of the sea. Decatur withdrew to repair h's riggings and the British cheered, thinking he was leaving them. The United States re- turned, however, and the Macedonian surrendered. Decatur refused to take lars. The only American naval officer offi-cer to be killed in action was Ensign Worth Bagley, who was killed during j 'the Battle of Cardenas, May 11, 1898, j on board the United States torpedo 'boat Winslow. The United States navy first investigated in-vestigated the possibilities of aviation avia-tion in 1908 and in 1910, with the cooperation co-operation of Glenn H. Curtiss, the first plane was flown from a naval vessel and the Instruction of naval of- J j ficers was undertaken by the Curtiss I j company. On January 18, 1911, Eu-! gene Ely, of the Curtiss company, made the f rst landing of a plane on ( a ship, the battleship U. S. S. Penn- j sylvania. Lieutenant John Rogers made the first extensive flight to be, made by a naval aviator in autumn j of the same year. I Captain Carden's sword, saying: "Sir, I cannot receive the sword of a man who has so bravely defended h's ship." Decatur treated the English officers very kindly and allowed them to keep their personal effects and their large stock of Maderia wines. The battle lasted one and one-half hours.
