Show NewSwimmingPool Is Attractive Feature I Gunnison's new swimming- pool, i: which is now practically completed, ' was bombarded for sure at the in- i formal opening last Sunday, when ' more than 1000 ctilzens from the i town and valley gathered at the re- i sort to witness the brief ceremonies i i and informal dedication of an asset ; to the city that will forever prove a j joy to the citizens old and young. :' As early as 9 o'clock Sunday morn- i ing many donned bathing suits and were splashing and disporting in the jj waters, and as the day advanced P others joined, and it is estimated that j fully 250 enjoyed bathing at the I; opening. Bathing was permitted un-P un-P til 9 o'clock at night, and at this hour j many were st'll enjoying the swim-H swim-H ming. The water was just in prime m ' condition in the morning, but the wind during the afternoon had a ten- dency to chill the bathers. No re-ij re-ij ports of accidents or bad results have ;j been received. y The crowd, perhaps, was the hea- 2 , viest during the evening, when the , high school Jand (assembled undjpr the direction of Milton Perkins and 3 gave a splendid concert. This feature fea-ture followed the Softball game be-i be-i tween Axtell and Fayette, in which ' Axtell won by a score of 16 to 14. Since the opening Sunday, the pool has proved an attraction every day, and bathers go for a d'p as early as 6:30 in the morning. e There are yet a few finishing j touches to be made to make the structure complete. Workmen are e busy this week erecting a fence :s around the pool and buildings. A flood lighting system, which will (j br'ghten the pool and bathing rooms, is being installed, and a few minor changes are to be made in other parts S' of the arrangements. A spring board, made of hickory and of the best quality, is expected soon and will be installed as quickly as possible. Th's feature, at present, is the only thing lacking to make the pool modern in every respect. )t Since the opening of the pool it has been found that the depth set apart for the smaller children is not in keeping for entire safety for the little tots, who also enjoy swimming. To meet the demand for the child-ot child-ot ren, a slight change is to be made. Twenty feet from the sand beach at the southeast corner is to be blocked off, which will make a pool 20x20 feet, and the water depth is to he between 16 to 18 inches,' or suffi- ciently shallow to permit the little tots to wade and splash to ' their heart's content in the waters. ?ay Two locker rooms each for men and women have been provided, and a LSsi room for resting and an office space 3es have been provided in the main JI,y building. It was only after considerable wor- a' ry and many contacts with the di-P' di-P' rectors of the ERA, and constant re' vigilance on the part of the backers l,ue in Gunnison, that the swimming pool Duy is now a realization. Its estimated cost will be approximately $6,000, with all labor furnished by the ERA. |
