Show New PWA Setup Will Effect Communities R. A. Hart, Utah state director, public works administration, has issued is-sued a statement to all public officials offi-cials of Utah that applications could not be accepted in the Utah office of PWA at Salt Lake C'ty after September Sep-tember 8. This date, pushed forward from September 16 previously announced, was set for final receipt of applications applica-tions under the emergency relief appropriation ap-propriation act of 1935, after receiving receiv-ing instruction from Washington. The staff of the Utah office will work night and day, including Sundays Sun-days and Labor day, in order to complete com-plete field examinations of applications applica-tions so they may be forwarded to Washington in time to secure consideration con-sideration for allotments of funds under the 1935 act. In his telegram to Mr. Hart setting set-ting the Washington deadline date, Public Works Administrator Harold L. Ickes stated that appl'cations in an amount in excess of $800,000,000 has been received from communities willing and able to bear 55 per cent of the cost of PWA construction projects pro-jects to win a 45 per cent outright federal grant. Administrator Ickes also announced announc-ed that the - advisory committee on j allotments had passed a resolution j which would prevent applicants eli-i gible for PWA projects from shopping shop-ping around among government! agencies in the forlorn hope of re-; eeiving more favorable terms. This resolution was passed, with the ap- j proval of the president, at the last J meeting of the board. The text of the j resolution follows: j "Resolved, that it is the policy of ( the advisory committee on allotments that any application heretofore or hereafter filed for a public works project which the applicant shalb withdrawn shall not be elig'ble for anj allotment by this committee for any ; other type of project except with the consent of the. administrator of pub-lie pub-lie works. j "Resolved, further, that no allotment allot-ment shall be voted to any applicant able to finance its project as a public works project but which neglects or refuses so to do." The policy laid down will block any efforts of public bodies, able to bear the'r share of the financial burden, j which might seek to secure special i favor by unwarranted declarations of j poverty designed to dodge this local , financial responsibility through se-I se-I curing discriminatory terms in their I favor by getting the federal government govern-ment to bear a larger share of the cost. |
