Show NOT MUCH CHANGE Each generation of men from time immmorial has produced its pessimists and cynics, who have viewed with alarm the deplorable deplor-able tendencies of their contemporaries. According to these gloomy individuals, the downward trend of human morals has always been in evidence, with the skids for perdition well gTeased. As a matter of fact, there has been little change in human nature na-ture since the dawn of civilization. At any time in the world's history his-tory there have been ample grounds for pessimism on the part of those who prefer to look upon the dark side! A writer in the Boston Bos-ton Chronicle in the year 1 800 pictured conditions closely resembling resem-bling those of the present day, from the viewpoint of the alarmist. In an article entitled "Prices Current," he wrote: "Morals Falling rapidly. - "Modesty (female) Quite out of fashion. "National Honor None on the market. "Public Taxes In great abundance. "Religion No price offered. "Public Virtue A contraband article; if discovered would rllin its possessor." x But there was nothing original in the lugubrious reflections of this winter of 126 years ago. The same things, in substance, were said centuries before, are being said today, and probably will be said for centuries to come. i |
