Show Local Lions Back Important Projects Boosting the potato culture in the Gunnison Valley, aiding in sponsoring sponsor-ing a free kindergarten school in this city, naming a committee to confer with proper officials and citizens in the endeavor to have the Mayfield students attend the Gunnison Valley high school, in preference to the Manti schools, were the major' sub- jjects' taken up by the Gunnison Lions club " at the regular luncheon meeting held Wednesday of last week at the Wistaria. An unusually large membership was present and much enthusiasm was shown when the leading projects were discussed. The importance of encouraging the culture of potatoes iin the valley was one of the leading subjects. Some few weeks ago the matter was taken up and a conference of several sev-eral farmers held, with the result that many valley farmers are preparing pre-paring to plant tubers. ' Approximately Approxi-mately 160 acres have already been pledged to the rnovement. Experiments Experi-ments made with potatoes in years gone by prove that they can be grown profitably and the quality is superior. The plan is being advanced advanc-ed to have one variety grown and through this a better market is always al-ways found, wholesalers preferring a uniformity as to gratle. The members of the local club de-clated de-clated themselves squarely back of the proposed kindergarten school and special committees are aiding in bringing the issue to a successful termination. A committee is also in conference with the school board members and Mayfield citizens in the endeavor to show the advantage in having students at Mayfield attend at-tend the Gunnison high school. H. B. Crandall, cashier of the First State Bank of Salina, A. C. Prows, of the Sevier Valley Mercantile company, com-pany, and Emmett Robins, manager of the White House hotel, members of the Salina Lions club, and Dr. Harold Crandall, were special guests guests at the luncheon meeting. |
