Show Citizens Ask For Road To Westside Farms Ernest L. Swalherg, C. A. Peterson, Iirigham Jensen, and many others interested in-terested in the building of a road that would connect the Westview-Clarion section with transportation to the Gunnison Valley Sugar factory and give those farmers residing there an easy and profitable outlet for the immense im-mense crops of beets, grain and live, stock, were before the county commissioners commis-sioners Tuesday praying for aid in building a road that would give the farmers an easy access to the factory and to the markets with their pro-duets. pro-duets. With the new road asked the distance dis-tance would be reduced all the way from eight miles to approximately three and one half miles. The delegation delega-tion from here made a strong plea for the improvement and the proposition offered in aid is one of the most flattering flat-tering ever made. Mr. Swalherg, as one of the com-imitteemcn, com-imitteemcn, stated that the proposition proposi-tion offered as incentive to the com. nissioners would involve little cost to I the county and that the individual farmers and beet growers had agreed i to stand the major portion of the cost jThe farmers of Clarion, have agreed i to build and grade the road from the Joe Jensen farm to the river. In addition to this a bridge will be erected erect-ed across the canal running west of the river. The Gunnison Valley Sugar I company will erect a bridge over the river independent of the commissioners commission-ers and any aid from the citizens. The citizens of Centerficld have agreed to build a gravel road to the western part of the city limits, and the citizens of the valley will go 50-50 with the commissioners in grading and graveling the road from the river to the west city limits of the city of Ccnterfield. Rights-of-way through all of the farms, with the exceptions of that of a piece of property owned hy a widow woman have been granted the committee asking for the road. With these concessions the cost to the county would be comparatively small with other requests made for road improvements. ! For the past three years farmers on the westside have been struggling desperately for road improvements. Each year brings disaster to those that are trying to improve the farms for the reason that crops are not ' marketed because the roads are impassable im-passable or next to it. The Westview-CIarion section, too is regarded as one of the be;-;t beet growing sections in the state. The crops are prolific, the tonnage large and the beets are of a superior quality. quali-ty. Put for the simple reason that there are no roads fit to travel or haul the products over during the har-J har-J vest season, the farmers are in dis-! dis-! pare and refuse to go any further L -! cause of the great losses sustained i-i not. having decent roads over which to travel. Experience during the past few years, particularly since the building of the million dollar sugar factory in the valley, has been ample proof that the beet raising, stock raising or farming, cannot be maintained main-tained with any profit for the simple reason that the cost of trasportation consumes practically all of the profits. pro-fits. J Another reason why the roads should be maintained and kept passable pass-able is the fact that a coteries of capitalists, cap-italists, at the solicitation of the citizens citi-zens of the valley, erected a sug;"-factory sug;"-factory costing a million dollars. T! citizens invited the factory, the fu.-tory fu.-tory is the big asset to the county and every inducement should be made to support it rather than discourage it by maintaining roads that are .1 detriment both to the factory and the beet growers. With the low cost of the ro;.d asked and with the cooperation off - r-ed r-ed from every side, the fanners end citizens in this valcv are hoping that some immediate action will be takea to build the highway. Advices from the chairman of the county commissioners yesterday were to the effect that the matter had been taken up and that the commissioners were figuring a budget for road building build-ing in several parts of the county. Xo. decision can be reached, however, before be-fore two weeks. Mt. Pleasant and citizens cit-izens from the north end of the county coun-ty are asking for the purchase of a rock crusher. The crusher, it is said, will cost approximately S3, 500 delivered deli-vered in the county. Other appeals have been made upon the commissioners commis-sioners and at the meeting Tuesday-it Tuesday-it was given out that relief would be forthcoming just as seon as arrangements arrange-ments could be made to borrow sufficient suf-ficient funds to care for the roads. |
