Show Prescribed Burns Are Planned For Local Area By David Eaker Officials from the Color Country Interagency Fire Management Area have announced plans to ignite several sever-al prescribed burns this spring in southwestern Utah and northwestern north-western Arizona. The burns would be managed by various federal and state agencies including the Bureau of Land Management, the Dixie National Forest, the National Park Service (Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks) and the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands. The burns will only occur if forecasted weather conditions are favorable and adequate firefighter fire-fighter resources are available. Portions of some of the burns have already been ignited and fire personnel are waiting for the return of cooler temperatures and lower humidities before continuing. The objectives of the pre (See BURN on page 7A) Burn From Page 3A scribed burns are to use management-ignited fire, where appropriate, appro-priate, to decrease the risks from wildfire to life, property and resources, on both public and private lands and to meet agency-specific resource management man-agement goals. Prescribed fire projects are to be conducted in a manner consistent with land and resource management plans, public health considerations (smoke issues) and approved prescribed fire plans. The Color Country Interagency Fire Management Area is an organization of fire management officials in southwestern south-western Utah and northwestern Arizona (the Arizona Strip) who promote safe and effective fire management through interagency intera-gency cooperation. Since many wildland and prescribed fires are of a multi-jurisdictional nature, interagency cooperation provides pro-vides an ideal background for cohesive ecological, social, political and economical considerations consid-erations for land management.
