Show Local Volunteers Attend Convention In Salt Lake City TROPIC Recently three Garfield County residents were invited to attend the annual Utah Volunteers Convention held at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City. These were Lori Mecham, Marsha Holland and Merrilee Mecham. The convention included many different workshops work-shops on ways to inspire and help build different volunteer programs. Also there was tremendous networking and sharing of ideas throughout the conference. The conference ended with an awards dinner where Governor Olene Walker presented awards to volunteer groups and individuals individ-uals throughout Utah. Inspire By Example President George W. Bush recently stated that "Americans are doing the work of compassion compas-sion every day by visiting prisoners, pris-oners, providing shelter for battered bat-tered women, and bringing companionship com-panionship to lonely seniors. These good works deserve our praise, and National Volunteer Week is an excellent opportunity opportuni-ty to salute our unsung heroes and encourage other to get involved," said Robert K. Goodwin, president and CEO of the Points of Light Foundation. RS VP Volunteers Five County RSVP volunteers volun-teers set an excellent example of service during FY 2002-2003. More than 1500 volunteers reported a total of 1 68,000 hours of service. 1 Based on the current dollar value of a volunteer hour ($16.54), RSVP Volunteers have contributed a whopping $2.7 million to agencies and programs pro-grams in southern Utah. i Senior Citizens Center Senior Citizen Centers in Garfield County can use addi-'tional addi-'tional help with meals on wheels delivery, senior transportation, center activities, making telephone tele-phone calls and other miscellaneous miscella-neous duties. Hospital Thrift Shop The Garfield Memorial Hospital Thrift Shop has need for additional volunteers on Monday and Tuesday afternoons after-noons and some Fridays and Saturdays. Each shift is only .three hours. The Thrift Shop is also looking look-ing for donated furniture items such as beds, couches, chairs, etc. They will pick up those 'items, even in Iron and Beaver counties.
