Show -u VHS Girls Are State Champs By John Yardley The Valley girls basketball team won the state title Saturday afternoon in Price 63-50 over the Enterprise Wolves. The victory avenged their heart breaking loss two years ago when Valley lost the final game after leading by ten points with less than a minute to go. Head coach Ferrel Heaton, sparked by junior stars Caroline Heaton and Beverly Glover, breathed a huge sigh of relief after living with that ugly loss for two long years. Heaton and Glover have been the leading scorers all year and hit for 22 and 15 respectively in the final game. However, it was a total team effort for the Buffaloes as point guard Jennifer Spencer was near perfection with 10 points, Dede Sorenson and Misty Griffiths scored eight each, playing with poise and intensity, and Erin Lamb and Sarah Heaton came off the bench to play important minutes as Valley won the girls championship for the fifth time in eight years. Sara Nelson and Kathryn Hess led Enterprise with 14 and ten points for Larry Phelps' team. The Panguitch girls team finished seventh in the tournament. Curtis Barney and Scott Christensen coached their girls through four days of tough competition. They defeated St. Joseph 66-34 the opening day with Catherine Howard pumping in 21, followed by Mindy Hulet and Cindy Peterson with 13. The second day, a missed call and a tough shot at the end cost the Bobcats a chance at victory as Duchesne beat PHS 48-46. It was a game Panguitch could have won. Howard led the scoring with 16. Friday, the girls in blue defeated Waterford 50-45 to set up the final day's game against Piute for 5th and 7th. With Mindy Hulet hurting from a very serious ankle injury arid Catherine Howard nursing an injury, Panguitch only kept it close for a half, before losing 57-46. Cindy Peterson banked in 14 and Lisa Duff eight for the Bobcats. Jennifer Bulkley, the fine junior guard who has been out all season with a serious knee injury, returned for limited play in the tournament, a hopeful sign for the future of Bobcat girl's basketball. This was the final season for seniors Mindy Hulet and Carla Farns worth. Congratulations to these girls for a fine season. In boys action, it is old news, as the teams played a week ago Wednesday due to the girls tournament. All three county boys teams lost league games: Bryce Valley to Piute, Panguitch to Enterprise and Escalante to Milford. The teams finish league play this Thursday before heading to Cedar City for the Round Robin Mar. 6, 7, and 8 at the Centrum: Bryce Valley will play Wayne County in Tropic; Panguitch will play at Milford and Escalante will play Piute at home that night. |
