Show They Will Be Accountable I feel that the condescending attitude at-titude of messieurs Van Hemert and Smith toward us locals needs rebuttal rebut-tal by a local. I find it interesting that all those in favor of forming the Grand Staircase Escalante National Na-tional Monument on the locals are either environmentalists, government govern-ment employees or both. The president of SUWA (Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance) is from Salt Lake City and except for a few "imports" and "plants", most members mem-bers are equally far removed. Few are home grown. Maybe this area should have been designated a National Na-tional Monument, but the problem is that the rights of the people involved in-volved were sorely abused. Clinton had neither the courtesy nor the intestinal fortitude to allow any input by those affected. This indicates indi-cates either imperial arrogance or contempt. Any way you look at it, Clinton got a lot of mileage out of this proclamation. He apparently paid a huge political debt to Indonesians, Indone-sians, bought a pile of ignorant environmental votes and repaid Utahns for his third place finish behind Bush and Perot. A political cartoon has been going around: it shows Clinton on the South Rim, mooning Utahns, the caption: "Clinton bending over for Utahns, but not back wards". Those environmentalists envi-ronmentalists with their fancy homes and BMW's remind me of a bunch of environmentalists years ago who buried a car in protest of auto emissions. After the "service", they jumped in their; BMW's and -roared off. Maybe the word "phony" ought to be applied here somewhere. Maybe good old Robert Redford will finally see the light and will return Sundance back to nature as a wilderness area. By the way, does anyone know how Redford acquired his multi-thousand acres? Under the Constitution, we have the right to pursue our destinies desti-nies without interference from those far removed, telling us what and how (please read the Declaration of Independence). Almost from its conception, the Federal government has been encroaching on state and individual rights. The Declaration of Independence tells that we have "unalienable rights..." and those who assume to take them from us or fail to protect us from govern mental abuse will be held account able.
